How a Montalbano Day Trip from Catania Works
Four steps from the pickup in Catania to the drop-off, including the one stop to confirm with the operator before you book.
Get Picked Up in Catania
Pickup is at your hotel in Catania, unless it sits in a pedestrian or street-market area, in which case the operator arranges a convenient meeting point. The itinerary lists Catania and Aci Castello as pickup options, and the description also mentions Taormina; pickup outside Catania is on request, at an extra cost, so settle it before you book.
Drive South to Ragusa
The first leg is about an hour and a half by air-conditioned car or minivan. The driver is listed as an English-speaking driver and guide, and the listing names English, Spanish and Italian. Ragusa gets about an hour on foot, in the old streets the series used.
Punta Secca and Lunch
The next hour is Punta Secca, the seafront village that played Marinella, where Montalbano's house stands. The listing offers lunch at Da Enzo a Mare, the trattoria on the waterfront; meals are not included, so you pay for it yourself and should say you want it when you book.
One More Stop, Then Back to Catania
The itinerary adds an hour in the province of Ragusa, then a drive of about an hour and three quarters back, with drop-off in Catania or Aci Castello. The highlights mention the police-headquarters site from the series, which is Scicli's town hall; the itinerary does not name Scicli, so ask the operator before you book if that stop matters to you.

A Guide to Montalbano Country
The Real Towns Behind the Series, and the Tours That Reach Them
Which town plays which place, what each day tour covers, what you can visit on your own, and what to ask before you book.
Il commissario Montalbano is the Rai television series, with Luca Zingaretti in the title role, adapted from Andrea Camilleri’s novels about a police inspector in a Sicilian town called Vigàta. It ran for 15 seasons, with the last new episodes in 2021. Vigàta, Montelusa and the seafront village of Marinella are made up. The series filmed them in real towns in the province of Ragusa, in the far southeast of Sicily, and those are what the tours visit.
The tour this site recommends is Sicily Grand Tour’s Inspector Montalbano locations tour from Catania: about eight hours by air-conditioned car or minivan, rated 4.9 from 73 reviews and from about $156 when we checked. It reaches Ragusa and Punta Secca, the village that played Marinella, and offers lunch at Da Enzo a Mare. Meals and entry tickets are not included.

Which real town plays which place
Four towns carry most of the series, and they sit within about an hour of one another.
| On screen | Real place | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Montalbano’s house, Marinella | Punta Secca, a hamlet of Santa Croce Camerina | A house at Corso Aldo Moro 44 on the seafront, now a bed and breakfast, and the lighthouse a few blocks along |
| Montalbano’s favourite trattoria | Enzo a Mare, Punta Secca | On the waterfront at Lungomare Amerigo Vespucci 2 |
| The Vigàta police station | Scicli town hall, Via Francesco Mormino Penna | A neo-Renaissance building whose set rooms can be visited |
| Vigàta’s cathedral square and old streets | Ragusa Ibla | The Duomo di San Giorgio, the Giardino Ibleo and the Circolo di Conversazione |
| The castle trip | Castello di Donnafugata, near Ragusa | A country castle with a garden; closed Mondays |

Addresses and episodes from a fan site’s location list and the tour listings, read in October 2026. Opening hours change, so confirm before you go.
Two of the towns repay a longer look. Scicli is a small baroque town, part of the Val di Noto that UNESCO lists, with the town hall, a pharmacy that is now a museum and a church cut into the rock. The Scicli police station guide explains how a visit works. Punta Secca is smaller still, a handful of streets facing the sea, which is why the house at Punta Secca can be seen from the beach in ten minutes. The wider map of towns, from Modica and Noto to the Trapani coast, is in where Inspector Montalbano was filmed.
What the day tours cover, and what they leave out
Three eight-hour tours cover the core: two from Catania and one private trip from Syracuse. They are not the same day, and the difference is mostly Scicli.
Sicily Grand Tour’s tour lists Ragusa, Punta Secca and a third stop in the province of Ragusa, an hour at each. Its highlights mention the police-headquarters site from the series, but its itinerary does not name Scicli, so if the town hall matters to you, ask the operator before booking. Lemontour’s tour from Catania names three towns outright, Punta Secca, Ragusa Ibla and Scicli, and its description says the town hall “served as the location of the Vigata police station”. Empeeria’s private trip from Syracuse adds the Castello di Donnafugata to Ragusa Ibla, Punta Secca and Scicli, and costs from about $692 on the platform.
Between about three and a quarter and five hours of each day goes on the road, which is the price of seeing a spread-out region in one day: the itineraries add up to about 3 hours 15 minutes of driving for Sicily Grand Tour, 3 hours 30 minutes for the Syracuse trip and over 5 hours for Lemontour. Syracuse is closer, at about an hour and a quarter to Ragusa Ibla. None of the listings includes meals or lists entry tickets as included, and the Lemontour tour is not suited to people with mobility impairments.

Which town to start from
Catania is the practical base: it has the airport, and both Catania tours leave from it. Syracuse works for a private trip. For Taormina, Sicily Grand Tour’s description says pickup is available there, but its itinerary lists Catania and Aci Castello, so ask first. Nothing on this site starts in Palermo, which is too far for a day that ends with a drive back. Montalbano tours from Catania, Syracuse or Taormina lays out the distances.
Doing it yourself
A hired car makes the same region cheap and flexible, because the towns are close and the roads are good; the exteriors of the Punta Secca house and Scicli’s main street cost nothing. Public transport reaches the larger towns: Rome2Rio estimates a direct bus from Catania airport to Ragusa in about 1 hour 45 minutes and a train from Ragusa to Scicli in about half an hour, but we found no timetable for Punta Secca, so check before you plan around it. A tour pays for the driving, a single route and someone who knows which corner a scene was shot on. Is a Montalbano tour worth it? weighs the two honestly.
Before you go
These are the television series’ locations, not the novels’ settings, so they suit viewers more than readers. The series is no longer in production. A local newspaper reported in April 2026 that no new episodes are planned, and the guide on whether Montalbano is coming back sets out what is known. The set rooms in Scicli are closed during any filming, and the bed and breakfast at Punta Secca closes for weeks each year, so a visit outside a tour can hit a closed door.

Inspector Montalbano Tour FAQ
What people ask before booking a Montalbano tour in Sicily, answered in the first sentence. Prices checked in October 2026.
In the province of Ragusa, in southeast Sicily: Punta Secca for the house, Scicli for the police station, Ragusa Ibla for the cathedral square and old streets. Modica, Noto and the Castello di Donnafugata appear too. The towns of Vigàta and Montelusa in the stories are invented, so no real place carries those names; the series borrowed real ones. Where Montalbano was filmed, town by town
Nowhere: Vigàta is Andrea Camilleri's fictional town, and the television series filmed it in several real ones. The Vigàta police station is Scicli's town hall, on Via Francesco Mormino Penna. The seafront house belongs to Punta Secca, whose name the series changed to Marinella. A tour that says it visits Vigàta is visiting these places. The police station in Scicli
In a seafront house at Marinella, which on screen is a house at Corso Aldo Moro 44 in Punta Secca, a hamlet of Santa Croce Camerina. It now operates as a bed and breakfast, La Casa di Montalbano. You can see the outside from the beach, and a fan site says the inside is open to guests who stay at least two nights; check with the B&B before you plan around that. Visiting the house at Punta Secca
Yes: the set rooms in Scicli's town hall can be visited on a guided visit, with a ticket bought at the entrance. One fan site lists daily hours of 10:00 to 18:00 and says it is closed while filming, but no official 2026 timetable turned up, so confirm hours with the Scicli museum system or the Comune. A visit lasts about 30 minutes. How a visit works
Not on the evidence we found: a local newspaper reported in April 2026 that no new episodes are planned. The last new episodes aired by March 2021, ending a run of 15 seasons. The locations did not close, so the tours still run. What is known about new episodes
For one all-day tour from Catania, Sicily Grand Tour's locations tour has the best rating on this site, 4.9 from 73 reviews, from about $156. Lemontour's tour from Catania has more reviews, 4.7 from 101, and names Scicli's town hall in its description, from about $128. Read the stops each lists before you choose, because the two do not cover the same towns. Compare the day tours
From Syracuse, yes, as a private car trip; from Taormina, only by asking; from Palermo, nothing on this site. Empeeria's private trip from Syracuse is about $692 on the platform and visits Ragusa Ibla, the Castello di Donnafugata, Punta Secca and Scicli. Sicily Grand Tour's description mentions Taormina pickup, but its itinerary lists Catania and Aci Castello, so ask first. Palermo is too far for a day trip to these towns, and no product here starts there. Which start town works
The three day tours on this site each list 8 hours. Most of that is driving: the Catania tours run about an hour and a half to two hours each way, and the stops themselves are 1 to 2 hours each. The Scicli walking tour is 2 hours and the palace visit 1 hour, because you start in Scicli. Every Montalbano tour
Yes, with a hired car; by public transport only some of them. Rome2Rio estimates give a direct bus from Catania airport to Ragusa in about 1 hour 45 minutes and a train from Ragusa to Scicli in about 33 minutes, but we found no timetable for Punta Secca, so check before relying on it. A tour buys the driving and the one-day route. Is a Montalbano tour worth it?
No: none of the listings includes meals, though Sicily Grand Tour and Empeeria both mention Enzo a Mare as an option. It is a trattoria at Lungomare Amerigo Vespucci 2 in Punta Secca, shown as Montalbano's favourite restaurant. Tables can run out, so ask for it when you book and decide before you pay. Punta Secca, the house and lunch
