Is an Inspector Montalbano Tour Worth It? Tour or Do It Yourself

An honest read on Montalbano day tours from Catania: who they suit, what the driving costs you, what you can do yourself with a car, and which listing fits which fan.

Updated October 2026

For a fan of the series without a car, yes: a day tour is the simplest way to see Punta Secca, Ragusa and, on some tours, Scicli in one day. For someone who drives, enjoys a map and wants one or two places, a hired car is cheaper and more flexible. For someone who has not seen the series, the places are pleasant Sicilian towns, but not a reason on their own to spend eight hours.

What the guests say

The listings carry real reviews. Sicily Grand Tour’s tour is rated 4.9 from 73, and one guest wrote that they were “big montalbano fans so enjoyed seeing some of the famous sights and locations”, naming the guide as friendly and informative. On Lemontour’s tour, rated 4.7 from 101, a guest from the UK listed what they saw: the police station, the commissioner’s room, the house by the beach and lunch at Enzo’s. On Empeeria's private trip, one reviewer called it “an expensive excursion” that “proved to be very good value for money” for two fans, particularly for reaching the remote castle at Donnafugata.

What the day costs you

All three day tours list about eight hours. The driving is the bulk of it: about 3 hours 15 minutes for Sicily Grand Tour, 3 hours 30 minutes for the Syracuse trip and over 5 hours for Lemontour. The stops themselves are one to two hours each. Meals and entry tickets are extra, and Sicily Grand Tour lists them as excluded. Add a ticket if you go inside Scicli’s town hall, and a lunch at Enzo a Mare if you want one.

What a car gives you instead

A hire car lets you stay in Punta Secca as long as you like, take the Scicli visit at your own pace and see Modica or Noto on the same trip. The roads between the towns are short: the day tours’ own itineraries put Punta Secca to Scicli at about 30 minutes and Scicli to Ragusa Ibla at about 40. What you lose is the commentary, which on Sicily Grand Tour comes from an English-speaking driver and guide, on Lemontour from a guide, and on the Syracuse private trip from a multilingual driver rather than a licensed guide.

Public transport covers Ragusa and Scicli, by a bus of about an hour and three quarters from Catania airport to Ragusa and a train of about half an hour on to Scicli, but we found no timetable for Punta Secca. So the house and the lighthouse need a car, a taxi or a tour.

Before you decide

Read the stop list of the tour you are looking at, because they differ, and see where each town fits and which start town works. The rooms in Scicli close during any filming, and the bed and breakfast at Punta Secca closes for weeks each year. Whether the series is coming back has no bearing on the places, which are open either way.
