Is Inspector Montalbano Coming Back? What Is Known in 2026

No new episodes are planned. A report by the Quotidiano di Ragusa in April 2026 about a visit by the series’ star Luca Zingaretti to the Scicli town hall set says so in as many words, and adds that the visit was not tied to any new film or television production. We found no announcement to the contrary.

What ended

The Rai series Il commissario Montalbano ran for 15 seasons, and its last new episode aired on 8 March 2021. It adapted Andrea Camilleri’s novels and stories about a Sicilian police inspector. In 2019 the broadcaster filmed three new episodes from his late books, and Zingaretti directed them. Camilleri’s very last novels were never filmed.

A prequel, Young Montalbano, was filmed in some of the same places. The fan site’s location list shows the Stair of the Turks at Realmonte, near Agrigento, used for both series.

Why people still go

The towns that played Vigàta and Marinella did not stop being there when the cameras did. Scicli’s town hall keeps its set rooms, and visitors can still go in on a guided visit when it is not closed for filming. Punta Secca’s house is a bed and breakfast. Ragusa Ibla’s cathedral square and the Castello di Donnafugata look as they did. The trade is that nothing there is staged: no actors, no scenery beyond what is permanent.

That matters for planning. A visit works best when you already know the series, because the tours point at buildings rather than performances.

Where to go from here

• Seeing the real places: where the series was filmed, town by town.
• A day trip: the three day tours compared.
• The house: visiting Montalbano’s house at Punta Secca.
• The police station: how a visit to Scicli works.
